Making Purpose Work
Franchee Harmon
Summary of the book
Making Purpose Work was written to help me understand why I couldn’t become the person I felt I was in my heart. Don’t get me wrong. I have been very successful, travel the world, done what could be considered “amazing” things, but there was something missing inside me. For simplicity, let’s just call it “me.” The person the world perceived me to be was not the person, I felt I was or wanted to be. I wanted to change the world and help people be better than they thought they could be. I thought, seeing through world through a limited lens, that business was the vehicle to do that. What I found out was that business is the less-likely vehicle for helping us change the world. Making Purpose Work explores why. Yet, change is possible. It starts with each of us individually and gathers momentum collectively. Being able to achieve what we see in our “mind’s eye” as our purpose is possible, but it requires us to understand how to change ourselves each and everyday. Making Purpose Work explains how I learned to do this for myself.

Story about the story
It took four years for me to write Making Purpose Work. I put my professional and financial future on the line to complete it. Since completing the book, I have become an independent publisher and founded HPH Publishing Inc, which is named after my father. I have met some of the most amazing people I have ever met (none of whom are CEOs of major corporations). If I had it to do all over again, I would do it in a heartbeat.
Why you choose to go “indie”
I didn’t “chose” to go indie. No major publishing house would publish my book. The reality of the publishing market today is that major publishers (the few of them that still exist) are very unwilling to take a risk on first-time authors. They are very willing to let authors self-publish and see if they can rise above the fray. If a self-published author can do this, a larger publisher may buy out the rights (no guarantees though).
Biggest mistake(s)
Writing a business book rather than a self-help book.
Best thing(s) that happened
I created HPH Publishing Inc.
Word of encouragement to other upcoming “indie’s”
The publishing industry is a great place to be, just don’t expect to get rich quick or at all. Become a part of the industry because you love books and words. There really isn’t any other reason to be a part of it.
